Author Eric Larocca is back with his second novel in the Burnt Sparrow series, and this was a tough read.
I don’t mean this in a bad way, but this was certainly a dark and depressing read.
We follow Rupert and Gladys, who have now become trapped in End House, with the only way to even, temporarily leave is to make a bloody sacrifice.
As usual Larocca doesn’t hold back on the gore when needed, but it’s the emotional torture he puts his characters through which is a site to behold.
We turn gruesome at night, feels like a riff between Hellraiser and a vampire novel, as the pair become entwined in Burnt Sparrow’s dark lores with only cruelty and bloodshed, there only means of escape.
The question now, going into the next chapter is, is it worth it for them?
This doesn’t quite have the world building of the first book, but offers something unique and at times, shattering. This isn’t a fun and pulpy read, again Larocca drags us down into the dirt and makes us chew on it.
Where the series goes next is anyone’s guess.
