The River (short) review

The River is the latest short film from East Midlands production company SuperFreak Media.

We follow a young woman who is taking a break from a spot of hiking to enjoy the local river, but little does she know she might not be alone. We come to see she isn’t out for a leisurely stroll but more running away from issues at home.

In these circumstances, a canoe lesson feels like a good idea…

The urban myth of Jenny Green Teeth is plastered on a local bridge as she continues her jaunt down the river, surely a signifier of bad things to come.

This definitely feels like the production company’s slickest and most adventurous short to date, given its glossy production value and sprawling locations plus filming on water, which is never straight forward. It leans on the tropes of aquatic horror whilst also paying homage to films such as Creepshow 2 and the slashers of the 80s.

The River carries plenty of tension and one really unnerving scene, where the people in the film have to play catchup to the audience as something is really awry.

Some of their finest work to date.
