Pennyblade by J.L Worrad review

The latest novel from J.L Worrad is firmly aimed at fans of fantasy authors such as Joe Abercrombie and Scott Lynch.

Having read Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea series, expectations were fairly high for Pennyblade, although I have to say this was a slog to get through.

The main issue is the inconsistent tones that never really match up, and the language can make it quite hard to follow, especially for those not really anointed in the fantasy realm.

Loosely based on the Dark Ages of Britain, Pennyblade follows Kyra Cal’ Adra, a person of former high-standing in society who has been living in exile from her servant lover and now sets off on a quest to settle the age-old conflict between the Main and the Isle.

From that summary it may feel quite streamlined by Pennyblade is anything but, and often gets bogged down with secondary characters.

While hardcore fantasy readers may lap up Pennyblade, it did very little for me.

Pennyblade by J.L Worrad is released on 15 March 2022 by Titan Books.
