Although ‘Dead in 3 Days’ was released at a time where torture porn was seemingly taking over the horror genre, it feels straight out of the late 90s.
In Ebensee, teenagers Nina, her boyfriend Martin, Clemens, his girlfriend Alex and Mona have been best friends since their childhood. On their high-school graduation day, they all receive the same message on their mobile phones, “In three days you will be dead!”, but they believe is a stupid joke from their weird schoolmate Patrick. From here the bodies start piling up and the teens must team up to survive a ruthless killer.
Our group of teens are also quite likeable, certainly much more than other groups from other franchises (Halloween Resurrection were looking at you).
This Austrian slasher takes some of the premise of I Know What You Did Last Summer, modernises it slightly and also fixes a couple of minor issues some may have with the Kevin Williamson-penned chiller.
What we get here is a more believable killer than Ben Willis but also the Agatha Christie style investigation which made I Know… so popular.
Dead in 3 Days is also quite visceral with two memorable death scenes including a drowning and innovative use of a broken fish tank. Some shots do feel slightly lifted from I Know… but the film also knows where it came from and pays homage to classics such as Friday the 13th.
Expertly paced and with a fantastic finale, Dead in 3 Days is easily one of the best slashers to come out of Europe.
