Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones review

Mongrels-book

Admitedly I haven’t read many werewolf novels before but I can safely say that Stephen Graham Jones’ Mongrels is certainly the most original.

The crux of the story is the tale of a pack of wolves as they venture across America trying to survive and also hunt.

Jones pitches this as a coming of age story as we look through a young boy’s eyes as he has to deal with the pressures of being a werewolf, constantly moving school, first love and well you get the picture.

We have tropes that have been frankly done to death in werewolf movies completely thrown out the window and it’s refreshing to have a new mythology created around these beasts.

There are moments of savagery but also some tender moments which make this a really compelling read even if not full on horror that some may expect.
