Hammer announces release of gothic horror Daughter of Darkness

A brand-new 2K restoration of the rarely seen post-war gothic horror, DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS, will be available for the first time anywhere in the world as part of the Hammer Presents collection of expertly curated British horror films.

A bold and provocative film that challenged the conventions of British cinema in 1948, with themes that remain relevant today, DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS has been painstakingly restored by Hammer from 2K scans made from the original film negatives and is now available with exclusive new extras.

Emmy Baudine’s magnetic attraction to the opposite sex causes her to be run out of rural Ireland by intolerant locals. But her violent reaction to intimacy soon catches up with her in the shape of a face from the past – a face ruinously scarred by Emmy’s fingernails.

Directed by Lance Comfort, DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS stars renowned Irish actor Siobhán McKenna who gives an eerie and compelling performance as a troubled young woman with murderous, psychotic impulses in this transgressive horror.

With chiaroscuro cinematography and a moodily evocative score, DAUGHTER OF DARKNESS features strong supporting performances from Maxwell Reed, Anne Crawford and featuring Honor Blackman in her first credited movie role before international fame in The Avengers.

Director Comfort brings a distinctive sensibility to this unsettling tale, explored further through brand-new commentaries and programmes that examine the film and his wider body of work, all presented in stunning HD for the first time ever.

Hammer Presents celebrates Hammer’s rich legacy in Horror cinema by shining a light on the remarkable work of Hammer’s peers, honouring the success of fellow storytellers and showcasing the films that contribute to the prestige of British horror.

With world‑class high-definition restorations from award-winning Silver Salt Restoration, each Hammer Presents release includes exciting additional features that highlight the film’s context and craft, enabling fans to really appreciate the restored material. The Hammer Presents range sits alongside Hammer’s wider home entertainment releases of Limited Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-rays.
