I have to say This Is Where the Future Bleeds is not my usual type of read.
Mike Brooks’ latest novel is, though, a swashbuckling fantasy adventure that, despite some twists and turns, thrives from its linear storytelling.
We follow Kitt Carver, known as one of the best diviners in the business, but her world is turned upside down when she survives an attack and the death of her regular broker.
Kitt brings together a ragtag group of misfits and sets off on a quest to warn others of the dangers of the Timelands Lands.
The obvious comparisons are to Tolkien’s work, given the mismatched group on an adventure motif, but This Is Where the Future Bleeds does an excellent job of building its own and quirky characters.
It may take a minute to wrap your head around this world, but once it’s established in the reader’s mind this is a fun and breezy read.
