Hex House by Amy Jane Stewart review

When a relationship becomes toxic partners can often try to seek sanctuary in something or someone that makes them feel safe.

Elly, who is heavily pregnant is trapped in an abusive relationship, until one night she snaps and makes a run for it and ends up at the titular Hex House.

What she finds is a convent of sorts, of broken women, all seeking some kind of solace but what they get in return is quite twisted.

Hex House is the debut novel from Amy Jane Stewart, and it’s certainly put her on the radar of ones to watch.

The story is hard-hitting, with rich characterisation plus fantastical elements that will creep up on the reader then dig their claws in.

Told across two timelines, we find out about Elly’s life, but also Siobhan, who was a budding filmmaker who comes to Hex House to film a documentary, and things don’t go as planned.

Stewart knows her characters and fills them with real nuisance, which makes Hex House a real page turner. The balance of horror, fantasy and drama makes for a compelling read.

Hex House is released on Paperback and e-book formats from Titan Books on 28 April 2026.
