The Beast review

Boar hunts in other countries feel like the equivalent of fox hunting in the UK, i.e. a select few take part and they are all rich arseholes.

When a young city boy is dropped off to stay with his grandparents in the country, he is forced to partake in this barbaric ‘sport’. This is the least of his problems though, as he has heard about a mythical beast that lives out in the countryside nearby…

Using the setting of cornfields is fantastic, given how claustrophobic they can be and how something can flash before your eyes and be gone in a second, it’s the perfect location for jump scares.

Joris Laquittant’s short film is beautifully shot with a haunting undertone and Grimm fairytale vibe throughout, as you get the feeling this family ritual has something more to it. Much like the cornfields in the film, the story is there to get lost in.

This has been one of the highlights of the Giallo Film Festival to date.

The Beast screens as part of Giallo Film Festival 2024.
