Kult review

I feel like today it is more dangerous to research cults than it might have been in yesteryear.

With the internet and social media a daily part of millions of lives, it can be hard to know what’s just online hullabaloo or something truly dangerous and sinister.

Daniel Algarin’s short Kult gives an internet sleuth the chance to expose a cult-like organisation but could this be a case of being careful what you wish for?

The cult in question is Unitology, with Ethan, our vlogging detective, intending to film it and expose it to the world via their vlog.

Kult is filmed like a found footage film, with viewers seeing a diary-like format as we chronicle his journey to exposure or extermination.

Instead of the jump scare or creeping tone of many found footage efforts, Kult is more surveillance-like as Ethan sneaks around trying to find clues to expose the cult.

Kult is a fascinating and timely short, which asks plenty of questions and provide just enough answers.

Kult screens as part of Giallo Film Festival 2024.
