Smoking Causes Coughing (Glasgow Frightfest 2023) review

I think it’s safe to say there aren’t many filmmakers out there making films like Quentin Dupieux.

His most renowned work so far came in the form of Rubber, a story about a killer tyre, which despite its absurd premise largely worked.

For Smoking Causes Coughing again Dupieux is thinking outside the box, as we follow a band of superheroes branded Tobacco Force as they go on a retreat to try to reconnect.

Little do they know the evil Lizardin is playing to wipe out them and the whole human race, the question is will they be able to stop him from their sunny lakeside retreat.

Tobacco Force’s usual gig is destroying monsters that feel plucked right out of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, including a giant tortoise.

It’s hard to say whether this is outright black comedy or just plain weird, as we have many sequences that will simply make you go ‘huh?’.

The gang regal each other with weird and wonderful stories, including one where a boy is crushed in a wood chipper but remains alive as just a pair of lips before being eaten mistakenly by a dog.

Quite possibly the strangest film you will see at Glasgow Frightfest; you will either hate it or love it I feel.

Smoking Causes Coughing plays at Glasgow Frightfest 2023.
