The Bottom review

Lakes are always a great setting for a horror film; carrying such mystic under their surfaces, if done right aquatic-based chillers can be some of the best.

In James Kautz’s short The Bottom, we open on an idyllic, yet chilling lake where a naked young man is being interrogated at gunpoint about the lake’s inhabitants.

We find that this is a couple squabbling but is there a deeper meaning to their disagreements?

John, the man holding the gun is severely paranoid but also appears to have a hazy backstory, which could involve an abusive relationship with one of his parents. Jude challenges him on his stories and things get quite intense, quite quickly.

Kautz does so much with very little, with his characters barely moving an inch with the dialogue and the performances making for a compelling and intriguing stand-off.

A stripped back-thriller with some stunning cinematography and a sting in the tail; The Bottom is well worth checking out.
