The Outwaters review

There are two horror films that have been recently released that are getting genre fans talking.

They are Skinamarink and The Outwaters.

While the former I couldn’t really wrap my head around, I have to say all of the hype around The Outwaters is completely justified.

Filmmaker Robbie Banfitch shows that even with a low budget you can produce high concept horror that is genuinely unnerving.

The Outwaters does take its time to warm up as we follow four friends, including two brothers, who are travelling to a deserted outback location to shoot a music video. For the first half it has to be said that very little happens in terms of scares, but when Banfitch switches gear the film doesn’t let up.

I compare its ambition to something like Baskin, as its solely focused on its vision and gives the viewer something visceral and truly bizarre at times.

Because of the found footage style this can be a jarring experience, and you will see glimpses of things you feel like you want to pause to get a better look at, but as the saying goes; less is more sometimes.

I won’t give away The Outwaters’ secrets but I can comfortably say this is the scariest film I’ve seen in quite some time.

Even when the credits are finished, The Outwaters will be stuck in your head for quite sometime.

Look out for The Outwaters on Screambox soon.
