I will say this right off the bat, we don’t see enough slasher movies with a gameshow setting.
While reality TV has gone off into different areas since the 2001 release of slice and dice feature Slashers, there was certainly more potential to carve out some fun slicing and dicing when it was more streamlined.
Here we pit six contestants against a varied bunch of psychotic killers, and all they have to do to win is survive.
Slashers, it has to be said is extremely low-budget, so don’t be expecting miracles here but given CGI may have been cheaper the filmmakers at least use practical effects for a series of grisly murders.
Even when the carnage is in full-flow, the contestants and killers are frozen to the spot if a commercial break hits, which is very jarring at first but comes into play later as the deck starts to thin on both sides.
The twist is largely telegraphed and does wreak of the noughties horror which was extremely sleazy and didn’t always put female protagonists at the forefront of their stories, well unless they were willing to shed some clothes.
Slashers doesn’t fully live up to its billing, but some audiences will find enjoyment in this low-budget affair, guaranteed to be found in many a bargain bin nearby.
