Is Randy’s death in Scream 2 the most shocking slasher demise?

With Scream 2 celebrating its 25th anniversary today, its time to remember one of the most shocking deaths of the series to date – Randy Meeks.

The movie-obsessive, sharp-tongued ‘love slave’ of Sidney Prescott met his demise on the Windsor College campus after sending Mrs Loomis over the edge with taunts about her late son Billy.

Randy is pulled into Gale Weathers’ news van before being bludgeoned to death, and Ghostface escapes before his body is shockingly discovered by Gale and co.

Like Sidney, Gale and Dewey, Randy had survived the bloodbath in Woodsboro despite being shot by Billy in the finale.

Wes Craven stated many moons later that it was his one regret killing Randy off, given his popularity amongst fans but while such a curveball at the time, it adds more pathos to the journey of characters such as Sidney and Dewey (well up until Scream 2022).

While Randy is gone, the character’s blueprint remains all over the series, with a cameo in Scream 3, while Kirby feels like a Randy for a new generation in Scream 4 and his sister’s twin children turning up in Scream 2022.

One of the other reasons this hits home more is the aftermath, where Sidney has to take control of the situation and looks to inform his parents. When Dewey tries to console her she states, she’s not glass and is not gonna break, showing a renewed steel to these harrowing circumstances that have followed her to college.
