As we head into the finale of the second season of Chucky, it is fair to say that the show has had some hangovers after the success of its first run.
Whereas the first season focused mainly on the story of Jake, Devon, Lexy and Junior, the second season has been much more sprawling with multiple storylines and mixed results.
The weirdest thing I’ve found about this season is the weakest storyline is that of Chucky himself. Our titular killer doll has played multiple roles, including a hulked-up version, a ‘good guy’ version and the colonel, who appeared to be orchestrating events.
The main setting of the boarding school where Charles Lee Ray grew up has offered up plenty of potential but 6 episodes in, hasn’t really figured into proceedings other than being a place where murders happen and can be blamed on accidents or unexplained incidents.
Devon and Jake have seemed shells of their former selves, Lexy has taken to pill popping and no obvious end game is in sight at this point. Storylines seem to be started and finished abruptly, sometimes within one episode living little for the viewer to grab onto.
Andy and Kyle feel so shoehorned into proceedings at this stage, even diehards OG fans may not be sad to see them finally offed.
Arguably, the most fun had this season has been with Jennifer Tilly/Tiffany, whose heightened camp gave viewers plenty of laughs. The best episode has been an isolated one-off with the delightfully Clue-esque Death on Denial, which didn’t feature Chucky until the final frames.
Given Nica’s perilous situation, with no limbs and having Chucky inhabit her body, its hard to see her having any sort of happy ending. Will she become the Dr Chilton of the Chucky series?
Even Tiffany’s storyline has been expanded with the introduction of Glen and Glenda and although storylines do seem to be finally merging together for the finale, it is hard to see how they can all gel given the different tones presented. It seems a lot of this season has been devoted to bringing Seed of Chucky to the masses, having been re-assessed by many, although I remain firmly in the camp of it being one of the weakest films of the series.
Chucky Season 2 has plenty to wrap up but with healthy ratings, it is a safe bet that it will get a third run on SyFy.
