Giving Up The Ghost (Soho Horror Film Festival) review

When a couple decides to have children for the first time sacrifices need to be made.

Whether this is financial, giving up the ‘Lad Pad’, pets or even toxic relationships. In Brad McHargue’s short Giving Up The Ghost, as the title suggests the spooky friend has got to go.

Akin to films such as Shaun of the Dead, our ghost Harold lives in Scott and Arianna’s basement and the couple squabble over whether he can continue this living situation.

The film explores what it’s like to be the spare part, the queer best friend that feels destined to be alone whilst clinging to the only life they know.

There is a real melancholic edge to this short, and the conclusion is truly shocking.

Giving Up The Ghost plays as part of Soho Horror Film Festival 2022.
