The Lake (Grimmfest) review

Every great film festival deserves a great monster movie – and The Lake is just that!

This Thai horror is a modern take on the Kaiju legend, with some incredible monsters and plenty of heart.

Director Lee Thongkham manages to add more emotive plot strands to the carnage, which recalls films such as The Host.

While some monster movies play it coy with their MVP, The Lake doesn’t mess about with an intense opening 20 minutes that barely draws breath.

The attacks are savage too, with riffs on films such as Jaws, Godzilla and Jurassic Park, whilst also carving its own path.

The cinematography is incredible here in a rain-soaked city that becomes overrun by these monsters.

Thongkham manages to balance a great story with plenty of monster action, something that the recent Godzilla films have failed to reconcile.

While its final twist is slightly drawn out this doesn’t take much away from what is one of the most original monster movies of recent years.

The Lake plays as part of Grimmfest 2022.
