The Price We Pay (Grimmfest 2022) review

I have to preface this review by saying this was my favourite screening of Grimmfest 2022, from the films I reviewed.

A woman at a local convenience store ends up on the run with a group of criminals after a botched robbery. They end up finding refuge at a nearby farmhouse, which hosts some unspeakable horrors.

The Price We Pay is one of those insane action horrors that just straps you in and doesn’t let go when it comes to raising its stakes.

There is a level of brutality and gore that will have you wincing in some scenes and cheering at the creativity of others. It doesn’t feel like there was a CGI frame in sight.

It has shades of From Dusk Till Dawn, where it starts as one movie and quickly becomes another. Much like Rodriguez’ effort, it manages the switch seamlessly.

In lead roles we have Stephen Dorff as the lead of the gang, who also has some moral compass whereas one of his counterparts played by Emile Hirsch is a real piece of work. This adds to the stakes once things go wrong as you are conflicted where you put your allegiance.

While they are the well-known faces, it is Gigi Zumbado who steals the show as Grace, who is forced to side with criminals when trying to survive.

Well-paced, full of action and gore, The Price We Pay will certainly entertain many viewers at Grimmfest.
