Will ‘Prey’ revitalise the Predator franchise?

The first teaser for Hulu’s Predator prequel Prey has been released, ahead of its streaming debut on 5 August 2022.

The brief 40-second teaser shows a young girl being pursued through a forest by an unseen force, which we will all know is the predator.

Prey is the origin story of the Predator in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago. Naru, a skilled female warrior, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.

The big question is; will it be the fourth time lucky for revitalising the series?

While Predator 2 was a solid sequel and probably remains the best sequel to date, it never hit the heights of the Schwarzenegger-starring classic.

Predators was an attempt to go back to basics with a jungle setting, it again paled in imitation and found Adrien Brody trying to make his best Schwarzenegger impression. On recent rewatches, it also felt like the quality lessened.

Finally, we come to the hybrid mess that was The Predator, a film that was guilty of having too many ideas and never really deciding on one. We had a 10-foot mega Predator as well as another ensemble cast but given its muddled plot and bloated runtime, this felt like another missed opportunity. The Predator bombed domestically at the box office taking $51 million off an $88 million, but it made over double that abroad, perhaps proving the Predator had a life yet.

Director Dan Trachtenberg’s feature looks to take inspiration from The Revenant rather than what’s come before, but will this be enough to prove a hit?

Also, is the decision to go to streaming a safer one than risking another box office failure?

We shall see on 5 August 2022, when Prey is released on Hulu.
