Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher review

Having read T. Kingfisher’s The Twisted Ones, I was curious to see what the author would come up with for Nettle and Bone.

While different in tone than Twisted, Nettle and Bone is more of a layered fantasy tale more akin to Game of Thrones than out and out horror.

Having said this, when it needs to be it can be brutal, but this is a hero’s journey couple with vengeance.

We follow Marra, an exiled daughter of nobility who plots to take out the evil king of the kingdom, who has imprisoned her sister. It is left to Marra to assemble a ragtag group to infiltrate the castle and take out the king and restore a semblance of peace.

Her motley crew includes a witch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a former knight plus a chicken possessed by the spirit of a demon (seriously).

Kingfisher knows the absurdity of some elements of the plot and hams it up, which creates a dichotomy within the plot which works within the fantasy realm.

Nettle and Bone will certainly appeal to fans of the Shattered Sea series from Joe Abercrombie and also the aforementioned Game of Thrones.

Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher is available on 26 April 2022 from Titan Books.
