Following an impressive box office of over $100m worldwide, Scream 6 or whatever the title will be; is set to start filming this summer.
The Hollywood Reporter has posted that directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin will be behind the camera once again with writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick also returning.
While there is no word on the cast yet, a number of the new cast did survive their encounter with Ghostface including the Meeks-Martin twins, Sam and Tara. Dewey finally succumbed to Ghostface but Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers, despite sustaining injuries, managed to survive again.
The question I pose is; does Scream 6 need the legacy cast now?
Scream (2022) felt like complete closure for both Sidney and Gale’s arcs, and despite the underlying trauma of losing Dewey, surely bringing them back without the need to, could feel counterproductive.
The latest movie went out of its way to build up this new cast, with Mindy Meeks-Martin and Tara considered the standouts amongst many fans.
And what about Sam? Will her bloodline destine her to go on her own killing spree or could she evolve to become a new Sidney for a new generation?
There is also the elephant in room about Kirby and even for those reaching, Stu Macher. Could either return or would this just feel like fan service?
The big positive here is that following the box office success of Halloween Kills, Scream (2022) has shown that horror is alive and well at the box office and this will certainly be music to the ears of slasher fans yearning for the return of Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
But what do you think, should Sidney and Gale sit this one out? Let us know in the comments.
