Yours Cruelly, Elvira – Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark review

It’s the book we never thought we needed – but now can’t put down.

After just hitting her 70th year, Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira: Mistress of the Dark has released a tell-all book about her, quite frankly, astonishing life.

From burning herself at a young age through to becoming a showgirl in Las Vegas at the age of just 17, there is enough story in the first 150 pages to fill an entire book. The number of people she has crossed over the years, from Tom Jones to Robert DeNiro.

We get a warts and all experience of a woman trying to make it big in a man’s world. Long before she became Elvira, Cassandra had tried many careers, but her persistence paid off once she landed the gig as the Mistress of the Dark.

You may feel like this is the conclusion of the story, but from here on out we only get more tales, some quite graphic (a whole chapter is dedicated to sexual assault) plus there are the capers of filming the camp classic Mistress of the Dark feature.

Peterson also talks openly of losing friends during the AIDS crisis of the early 1980s, which at times are simply heartwrenching, and even during a global pandemic, are hard to imagine.

Overall Yours Cruelly, Elvira, more than delivers on its promise of a story like no other and even on the fence fans of Ms Peterson, will be head over heels for her by the time they close the final chapter.

A real tale of perseverance and going after your dreams; inspirational stuff.

Yours Cruelly, Elvira – Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark by Cassandra Peterson is available now in Hardback.
