Prisoners of the Ghostland coming to Shudder tomorrow!

Shudder will present the streaming premiere of iconic and prolific Japanese director Sion Sono’s post-apocalyptic Samurai-Western adventure Prisoners of the Ghostland on 19th November.

Starring Nicolas Cage, the Shudder Exclusive film is Sono’s first English language production and combines high-octane action and visually arresting design and cinematography with a high-stakes, supernatural-tinged storyline.

In the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town, a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by a wealthy warlord, The Governor (Bill Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) has run away. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within five days if he doesn’t find the missing girl, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman – and his own path to redemption.

Making its debut as an official selection at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Prisoners of the Ghostland has received an enthusiastic reception from reviewers. Commenting on the film’s unique style and storytelling, Culture Fly Online called it “weird and wild and unpredictable,” Looper hailed it an “uncompromising, unapologetic, unhinged cinema spectacle” and Den of Geek said it’s “strange, surreal but, crucially, lots of fun.” Empire Magazine commented that the film has “visual invention to spare” and Bloody Flicks noted that “the action sequences are superbly choreographed.” Flickering Myth praised Nicolas Cage’s performance, saying the film sees him “stretching every sinew of the unhinged charisma that makes him arguably the most idiosyncratic movie star on the planet today” and SFX Magazine concluded that “a cult following is assured.”

Prisoners of the Ghostland was written by Aaron Hendry and Reza Sixo Safai and produced by Laura Rister, Michael Mendelsohn, Ko Mori, Reza Sixo Safai and Nate Bolotin.
