I must admit I do love a film that flips a narrative trope and adds some laughs in there for good measure.
In Yoko Okumura’s Basic Witch we meet Lily and Brian, a couple who may have some issues to work through; although maybe witchcraft wasn’t the way to do it.
After a night where Brian sleeps like a log while Lily can’t settle, we find out they did some things under the sheets that both hadn’t fully consented to. This is not played in a dark manner, but more as a social commentary regarding consent.
Basic Witch is smart and sprinkled with plenty of laughs and will certainly shows some scenarios that some viewers can relate to.
A fun watch with just the right dose of magic.
Basic Witch screened as part of Soho Horror Film Festival’s Shockdown Saturdays.
