Tales from the Hood 1 & 2 Blu-Ray review

While it is surprising that Tales from the Hood has never had a UK blu ray release until this date; it seems ever fitting that it comes out in 2020.

The stories, especially in the first film are so much a mirror of stories that have taken place over the past few years that they feel like they have been lifted out of a history book.

Tales from the Hood is a milestone for cinema, as one of the only black-fronted horror anthologies; plus it is damn good too.

With an amazing and campy turn from Clarence Williams III, we recount four stories which circle around the themes of domestic violence, racism, a creepy white and blonde haired racist politician (draw your own conclusions) plus a gangster story turned sci fi caper.

The sequel only arrived two years ago, some 23 years after its predecessor but while having the ever-dependable Keith David in-tow, it does not feel as razor sharp.

This boxset from the BFI includes retrospective audio commentary and documentary plus a fully illustrated booklet for fans to feast on. For anyone who wants to see horror from a different perspective or wants to discover more black cinema; Tales from the Hood and its sequel is one of the best places to start.

Tales from the Hood 1 & 2 Blu Ray boxset is released on 2nd November 2020 from the BFI.
