For the latest Horror Through My Eyes feature we are joined by director Craig Fisher to discuss the films that have shaped his career so far.
The Horror Film That Makes You Sick –
To be honest, there isn’t much that affects me as I’m fully aware nothing is real, but at a push I would say A Serbian Film.
The horror film that scares you the most –
I never get scared in Horror Films. But the first and last time a film scared me was when I was 7 and I watched The Changeling. Growing up on Horror Movies meant I knew it was all fake and make up effects so nothing freaked me out, BUT The Changeling is all about atmosphere and sound design and that was new to me back then, so yeh, that scared little Craigy.
The Horror film you can only watch alone –
I’d probably say a Seribian Film again. It’s definitely NOT one of those films you wanna watch with a group of friends whilst eating pizza and popcorn (mixed with MnM’s).
That horror film you own but secretly hate –
Warlock 3. I have the film as I am a completist, and wanted all 3 films – but WOW – that film is so so bad. Ew.
Your horror guilty pleasure –
I guess over the years I’ve had many guilty pleasures, but I recently watched Tammy And The T-Rex and LOVED IT, so this is now my new guilty pleasure.
That horror film with a better cast than its script –
Ouija: Origin Of Evil. Elizabeth Reaser! Lulu Wilson! Henry Thomas! Doug Jones! LIN SHAYE!!! And Directed by the brilliant Mike Flanagan! This film is better than it has any right to be, and so far removed from the abysmal Ouija. HOWEVER – the script is pretty lame. I know Producers cut almost 40 minutes, so that might be the reason it doesn’t sit very well for me. And the ending was stupid AF.
The horror film you have rewatched the most –
Hmmn… hard one. I’d say I’ve watched a few of my favourites too many times to count – Poltergeist. Creepshow. Fright Night. Witchboard. Child’s Play 2 and Nightmare On Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors.
That horror film you have owned on VHS, DVD and Blu Ray –
Poltergeist, Return Of The Living Dead and Vamp.
Your scariest cinematic experience –
I don’t really have any ‘scary experiences’ but The Descent definitely made me feel claustrophobic.
That horror film you need a shower after watching –
The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) – The baby birth – need I say more?
The horror film that made your jaw hit the floor –
The ending of Eden Lake
A horror film you used to love but now despise –
Well ‘despise’ is a strong word, but these days I do dislike House 4: The Repossession. Such a messy film and dumb script.
On the flipside, a horror film you despised but now love –
Thir13en Ghosts. I’m a lot more forgiving of films these days, and TG is SO much fun! I don’t really know why 19 year old me didn’t like it!?
The horror film you laughed the most at that isn’t a comedy –
Pieces – ‘Baaaasssstard!!!’
What is the craziest practical effect you have seen in a horror film –
Society – the ‘shunting’ – Screaming Mad George.
The film that you introduced family or a friend to that you wished you hadn’t –
I introduced Hereditary to my Mother. Her response – ‘Well, that was a boring, drawn out film for such a simplistic story’ – as much as I like the film, she’s not entirely wrong!
