To classify Super Dark Times as an out and out horror would be to do it a disservice.
This is not to say that there are some genuinely horrific scenes, but they are eclipsed in many ways by the drama that comes with them.
After a deadly accident which leaves a schoolboy dead, three teenagers must deal with the fall out and everything that comes with it.
What may surprise viewers most, is how Super Dark Times plays its hand quite early, with the majority of the film dealing with the consequences of such a terrible incident.
Many will draw comparisons with Mean Creek, but that came across as more melancholic whereas SDT takes a u-turn for its finale which sets it apart.
It’s compelling, quite sad but ultimately engrossing. It does what it says on the in, but Super Dark Times is an essential watch.
