Will ‘In A Violent Nature’ transform the slasher film?

Every now and then a film comes along which gets audiences buzzing, as a reinvention of a sub-genre.

Thinking back to films such as Cabin in the Woods or It Follows, these were features thinking outside the box and giving us something fresh when it felt like everything had been done.

And so we come to In A Violent Nature, a brand new slasher film, which boasts a film completely shot from the point of view of a slasher killer.

It’s hard to believe this hasn’t been done before, but here we are. The trailer was released recently, following glowing reviews coming out of the Sundance Film Festival in January.

The big question is; can it justify the hype?

It doesn’t take too much to get us slasher fans excited, as the sub-genre itself is quite formulaic and often we can be won over by competency rather than something that will gatecrash the Oscars.

Influences are said to include Gus Van Sant’s haunting Elephant, which tiptoes around a theme very similar to the Columbine massacre.

What In A Violent Nature appears to have, is the motif of the ‘bomb under the table’, as we will follow this killer through the woods knowing their intentions, but once potential victims stumble upon him, often they may not have a clue, depending on where we are in the runtime and the body count.

Our killer seems akin to Jason Voorhees, so for those missing the Crystal Lake killer, this may also fill in the gap until his next big screen appearance.

The slasher film never really went away, but we have seen it turn into box office dollars with the revivals of the popular Scream and Halloween series, plus the television adaptation of Chucky and the upcoming Friday the 13th.

The other caveat is that the film is set to be released on Shudder later this year, so could it die a death on streaming before reaching wider audiences? If IFC Films have confidence in the product, hopefully, this can have a cinematic debut before hitting streaming, and fingers crossed, physical media.
