Diavola by Jennifer Thorne review

It may only be March, but Jennifer Thorne’s Diavola is easily the best book of 2024 so far.

Described as Heriditary meets The White Lotus, we follow a dysfunctional family who come together for a getaway to an Italian villa that has a dark past.

When tensions start to rise amongst the collective things also start to get weird, with mystery sightings and weird goings on.

The key to Diavola’s success is the rich characterisation of our leads by Thorne, especially squabbling siblings Anna and Benny. Add into the equation, Benny’s new partner, plus sister Nicole and her children and potentially adulterous husband and you have a melting pot ready to explode.

The story itself is interesting on its own, before any supernatural hijinks happen, which is a credit to Thorne’s writing.

I must admit, I become heavily invested in this quickly and burned through it in next to no time.

This is my first Thorne novel, and on this evidence I will certainly be checking out more soon.

Diavola by Jennifer Thorne is available now in various formats from Titan Books.
