Who is the Doctor?
Well, it appears as though its someone with a lot of time on their hands. Starting off with a bang, bang, bang approach of squeezing the maximum amount of kills into 3 minutes, New Fears Eve does what normally happens and puts the hand brake on.
We are introduced to the employees of Hooper Industries as they approach their New Years event. Mr Dugan, their boss who exhibits all of the business acumen of Michael Scott without the personality to back it up decides it is the best time to announce layoffs, through a series of crude but very funny dialogue.
It sign posts that at some point, the Doctor will cross paths with the staff, especially this MD and his sycophantic assistant. Fans of the genre will be able to spot how things will unfold and for the most part enjoy it.
Despite the kills, it lags when the assembled players are required to act, and whilst there are some funny moments they come early on courtesy of Mr Dugan, there is no one else capable of delivering lines in the same way as Dave Sheridan who excels in that role.
If you are judging this based on the frequency and variety of kills, then there are some quality moments here, especially with a nod to the SAW films where the police discover a still breathing body and in their attempt to release him set off a booby trap which makes its way around the rest of the covered victims in this room.
That’s pretty cool, achieving a lot by showing little and it’s a testament to the team that they keep it practical at all times. Overall, its worth a punt, with a nifty twist at the end.
New Fears Eve is now available on all the standard streaming services to rent or buy.
