The In Search Of Darkness series continues to be a juggernaut and encyclopedia for horror fans with its latest release focusing on the late 90s in the horror genre.
In this mammoth 6 hours and 23 minute effort, we bring together some of the genres finest, including John Carpenter, Don Mancini, Mike Flanagan, Doug Bradley plus some of the stars of the time such as Rebecca Gayheart and Jamie Kennedy.
If you’ve seen the other chapters of this series you will be familiar with the format going year by year picking some of the best (and worst) of that year with special segments reserved for special subjects.
Some of the highlights of 1995-1999 include special treatment for the emergence of found footage horror in the wake of The Blair Witch Project, the growth of J-horror post Ringu and the late 90s slasher revival kicked off by Scream.
While it does cover the big hitters like the films listed above, there are spots for films that are now taking on cult status such as The Frighteners and Tremors 2, The Relic and Event Horizon.
You can maybe accuse the makers of rose tinted glasses with some focus pieces such as House on Haunted Hill and Phantasm 4, but for all of them there is also Deep Blue Sea, Blade, The Sixth Sense and even Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow.
My favourite segment was the unmade 90s horror projects, as we touched on projects such as the infamous John Carpenter reboot of The Creature from the Black Lagoon and a lost Phantasm sequel. This is kind of segment is like catnip for horror enthusiasts.
Overall, In Search of Darkness 1995-1999 is a welcome addition to the series and goes to show the so-called barren period of horror at this time is merely a myth. Good horror has always been there, you just need to seek it out.
In Search of Darkness 1995-1999 is available as part of a Digital Flash Sale from Friday 16 January for 10 days, on their website.
