The year of 2025 definitely feels like the year of the witch.
We’ve had a couple of really memorable ones on the big screen with Bring Her Back and Weapons and also in literary form, which includes Nuzo Onoh’s Futility.
What’s refreshing about this tale of witchcraft is the Nigerian origin, which adds another facet of intrigue to this story.
We follow the dual stories of Chia and Claire, who couldn’t be more different but are also on a collision course for each other.
Onoh has a real devilish wit when writing, and sprinkles this throughout, making Chia especially quite the fleshed out character who can be both sinister and very funny.
After Claire visits Chia restaurant her life is turned upside down, and she is left in a race against time to reclaim the life she had.
You won’t read anything quite like Futility this year, with plenty of gore, laughs and foul-mouthed vengeance to fill a year’s worth of reading.
It may take a little getting used to Onoh’s style but once you’re caught in their spell there’s no escape.
Futility by Nuzo Onoh is available now in various formats from Titan Books.
