The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is one of the best modern vampire novels, and it’s about time Grady Hendrix’s novel was adapted for the screen. While it could have lent itself well to cinematic production, it was recently reported that it will be made into a television series.
With Danny McBride and Edi Patterson set to write the series alongside Hendrix, the series has the potential to be a massive hit.
Warner Bros. Bought Rights to the Book in 2024
Due to the popularity and success of The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, there has always been talk of transforming it into a live-action offering. It was confirmed in 2024 that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the book now, and that it will be released on HBO Max.
McBride and Patterson have a long history of creating content for HBO, and have most recently collaborated on the hugely popular The Righteous Gemstones. Although McBride is best-known for his comedy work, he has also contributed to the horror genre in recent years. He worked on Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends with David Gordon Green in 2021 and 2022 respectively, and the two also collaborated on The Exorcist: Believer in 2023. With McBride’s experience and connection to the genre, he could be the perfect person to bring The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires to life on the screen.
Novel is a Chilling Addition to the Vampire Genre
The vampire genre is one of the most enduring categories in entertainment, with some of the earliest films ever based on the bloodsucking fiends. Every generation has its own vampire offerings that have introduced them to the traditional tropes, and now these span beyond books and films and into games as well.
Even the iGaming market has offerings that tap into the rich tradition of vampires, with Immortal Romance one of the most popular slots of all time. Players can use a casino sign up bonus to play the game, such as the deposit match for new players. It features classic vampires on the reels, and immerses players in a gothic setting.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires uses many of the tropes you’d expect to find in a vampire offering, but it brings them to a modern suburban setting. This makes it feel all the more real and plausible, with everyday people having to band together to try to defeat the evil being.
What Other New Vampire Offerings Are There?
There has been no official confirmation about when The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires will be released yet, so there may still be a while to wait before it hits HBO Max. In the meantime, though, there are plenty of other offerings that vampire fans can enjoy.
AMC’s adaptation of Interview With a Vampire has been met with positive reviews, and the third season of this is expected to premiere in 2026. There’s also Ryan Coogler’s recent feature, Sinners, which is set in the American South of the 1930s and available on HBO Max.
For anyone who hasn’t read The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires yet, it’s well worth checking out before the series drops. The television adaptation has the potential to be great if it stays true to the source material.
