Halfway Haunted (Hollyshorts 2025) review

By Mark Hockley

A darkly comedic haunted house tale follows a tenant and a ghost attempting to thwart an impending eviction.

Hannan Younis stars as Jess, a down-on-her-luck woman facing homelessness. Her new landlady (a fun role for Sugar Lyn Beard) plans to demolish the building and kick her out. Jess’s only hope lies in accepting help from the house’s apparently affable ghost (Kristian Bruun). He offers to scare the landlady away. But the spirit has an ulterior motive and Jess soon finds herself in over her head.

Clocking in at around 16 minutes, this short film is a solid effort, buoyed by strong performances from its three leads. The visuals are well-composed and the pacing keeps the story moving briskly, without unnecessary padding.

Director Samuel Rudykoff delivers a slick, competent piece that entertains without ever quite standing out. The ending lacks punch, but there’s little here to really criticize. It’s a tidy, polished film that won’t leave a lasting impression, but comfortably fills its brief runtime.
