Severin Films and Monocular Films today announced the European Premiere of their original documentary THE DEGENERATE: THE LIFE & FILMS OF ANDY MILLIGAN, which explores the exploitation provocateur hailed as “the Fassbinder of 42nd Street” (Artforum). The film has been selected to play at FrightFest, London’s largest horror film festival, 22 August 2025 at 1:10 PM.
Andy Milligan was an innovator of experimental theater, an early voice in Queer filmmaking, and one of the most polarizing figures in the history of horror and exploitation cinema. Co-directors Josh Johnson and Grayson Tyler Johnson’s documentary “[offers] viewers an eye-opening look into one of the weirder and darker corners of cinema history” (RogerEbert.com) as it reveals the truth behind the cult figure through interviews with colleagues, critics, friends and fans, as well as scenes from Milligan ‘classics’ that include THE GHASTLY ONES, BLOODTHIRSTY BUTCHERS, GURU THE MAD MONK, TORTURE DUNGEON and THE RATS ARE COMING! THE WEREWOLVES ARE HERE!. Additionally, the documentary features the recently unearthed – and sole-existing – audio interview with Milligan himself, as well as clips from his thought-lost films THE DEGENERATES and KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME!, both discovered and newly restored by Severin Films.
“A story long overdue its time in the mainstream spotlight” (Alliance of Women Film Journalists), THE DEGENERATE: THE LIFE & FILMS OF ANDY MILLIGAN – produced by Josh Johnson, executive produced by Carl Daft and David Gregory, and co-produced by Andrew Furtado, Nicole Mikuzis and Deanna Rooney – explores the truth behind one of the most depraved, transgressive, and captivating legacies in film history.
Josh Johnson and Grayson Tyler Johnson will attend the program.
