Angel Down by Daniel Kraus review

The trenches of World War I were a horror show on their own, but author Daniel Kraus is ready to throw something else into the melting pot – an angel.

It seems like such an odd juxtaposition, but this is one of the reasons why Kraus’ novel works.

This isn’t your standard idea of an angel, Kraus works hard to create something truly unique and at times quite bizarre. Divine intervention this is not.

We follow the journey of Private Cyril who is sent into No Man’s Land to recover a fallen comrade but finds our titular angel. This triggers a series of bizarre events, with some soul searching and also commentary around the brutality of war.

Given the situation they are thrust into, battle lines are drawn between colleagues and the war may be coming closer to home than the squadron may have wanted.

Angel Down is a tale of survival sprinkled with some supernatural leanings and a group of compelling characters who are more complex than you may have thought.

This is a different kind of horror story.

Angel Down by Daniel Kraus is available now in various formats by Titan Books.
