Horror fans must start to know what they are going to get when they hear ‘directed by Demian Rugna’.
For the uninitiated, Rugna is responsible for the fantastic, and underseen Terrified, which is usually found streaming on Shudder.
Now we come to When Evil Lurks, a film that combines shocking imagery and a breakneck pace that will exhilarate.
Rugna takes a few moments to set the scene, but once this film shifts gear, strap yourself in.
As the cover of this new release from Second Sight Films teases, there is a moment involving a dog that you won’t be able to unsee.
When Evil Lurks plays almost like a virus film, but in this case, much in the same way like The Sadness, the disease causes people and other things to go very crazy and do some unspeakable things.
Rugna doesn’t hold back on the gore, which is a refreshing step away from the safety of neutered Hollywood productions. The blood flows, and When Evil Lurks is certainly better for it.
This fantastic set from Second Sight goes all out, as expected in the special features department, with a new audio commentary, interviews with Rugna plus actors Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demian Salomon and Virginia Garafalo. Evolution of Horror creator Mike Muncer also chips in an excellent visual essay.
If you pick up the limited edition you will also be treated to a 120-page booklet featuring essays from the likes of Second Sight mainstay Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Meagan Navarro, Rocco Thompson and Heather Wixson.
For those who have slept on Terrified and When Evil Lurks, now is the time to fill that Demian Rugna void, and When Evil Lurks is the perfect way to start.
When Evil Lurks is available now on Blu-Ray and 4K from Second Sight Films.
