Talk To Me (Blu-Ray) review

I think it’s only fair to preface this review by saying, on first watch I wasn’t that taken with Talk To Me.

Something just didn’t quite click, but luckily time is a healer and on second watch; well, I’m on board.

I would describe the Philippou brothers’ supernatural possession film as in the same vein as It Follows, as in when it was released it felt quite fresh and gave us something new.

Talk To Me really commits to the bit too, feels like a meditation on grief plus at times being bone-crunchingly nasty.

The central performance from Sophia Wilde feels quite layered, as her curious teen brain juxtaposed with her longing for her dead mother, take her into dark and deeper waters she may not be able to swim out of.

In terms of authenticity, all the characters here actually feel and act like teenagers, which makes it all the more shocking when some are put in mortal danger.

The Philippou have also crafted an interesting but open lore here too, which given the announcement of a sequel makes perfect sense. The jarring conclusion can go in many different directions with many questions still left unanswered but not in a way where you will feel underwhelmed. It’s the equivalent of having a great meal, and just wanting a few more bites once the plate is clean.

Feature-wise Second Sight Films once again knock it out of the park with two audio commentaries, interviews with the Philippou’s, the producer, cinematographer plus featurettes and deleted scenes.

If you’re a big fan of Talk To Me, and want your Philippou fix ahead of Bring Her Back, this is the blu-ray set for you.

Talk To Me is available in Blu-Ray and 4K now from Second Sight Films.
