It feels like with the release of last year’s Longlegs, that people are once again seeing the appeal of a damn good serial killer story.
Of Flesh and Blood, jointly written by N.L. Lavin and Hunter Burke, is a dark journey into the story of the Cajun Cannibal. The twist here is that said serial killer, is related to a forensic psychiatrist who gets drawn into some copycat killings.
Giving this narrative a familial connection makes this quite the compelling story and Of Flesh and Blood has whispers of the Hannibal TV series, as it turns out this isn’t your average cannibal killing spree, if there ever was one.
Our protagonist Vincent, who is almost tarred with his family’s legacy gets digging in true Will Graham-style and the more we know, the more disturbing the story becomes.
There is also a hint of the supernatural here, which adds another facet to the story and not some by-the-numbers documentary you may see floating around Netflix.
Of Flesh and Blood is intuitive and plays with us as the reader, but not in a confusing way; it wants us to discover the truths for ourselves.
From the books I’ve read this year to date, this has to be my favourite so far. Of Flesh and Blood lures you into its dark web and doesn’t let you go until you discover that the Cajun Cannibal is a story more bizarre and horrifying than you can imagine.
Of Flesh and Blood by N.L. Lavin and Hunter Burke is available now in various formats from Titan Books.
