I should preface this review by saying that Jason X is one of my ride or die films.
When you get to the tenth entry in any franchise you have to get creative; so why not go to space?
The key to why it works is that Jason X is very much in on the joke and leans into its absurdity. The dialogue is cheesy, but it feels like the actors are winking at us at times, saying, ‘we know what movie we’re in.’
No matter your thoughts on the film, most fans can also agree that the frozen head smash is one of the franchise’s most creative kills. I can recall seeing this for the first time and just bursting out laughing at the madness I was witnessing.
If you don’t know the story; after being captured at Crystal Lake (now a research facility), Jason Voorhees escapes once again but this time he ends up cryogenically frozen with his last would-be victim. Fast-forward to the Year 2455 and the Earth has been left to rot, and a crew from Earth 2, set off on a mission which ends up bringing both onto their ship.
Once Voorhees thaws out, chaos ensues, leading to the creation of Uber Jason, a half cyborg/half human – evil truly gets an upgrade.
For any fan of the series, this 4K restoration is essential viewing, plus it’s stacked with features including archival features from previous DVD incarnations plus some fantastic documentaries on the making of and legacy of the film within the Friday universe.
While we patiently wait for Jason’s return, likely in the Crystal Lake TV series, this release, coupled with Arrow’s 4K of Jason Goes to Hell, will comfortably satisfy your cravings for more Voorhees action for now.
Jason X is available in 4K and Blu-Ray now from Arrow Video.
