Cleanin’ up the Town: The Story of Ghostbusters by Claire Bueno review

While like me you may have thought that Claire and Anthony Bueno’s extensive documentary Cleanin’ Up The Town covered everything you could imagine about Ghostbusters – think again.

Claire has used the interviews and stories from the 12-year journey of bringing this doc to screen to create this definitive guide to the horror comedy classic.

Clocking in at over 500 pages, we have behind-the-scenes pictures from the set, plus in-depth discussions on all of the special effects, the script, the Bill Murray of it all.

Much like the doc, Bueno’s access to pretty much all of the big hitters sans Murray and Rick Moranis, means you get the whole story, or as close as possible.

Ernie Hudson is warm and welcoming about his casting and the perceived shoehorned element of Winston within the group and Akroyd takes us back to the very genesis and the wild concepts of what he originally wanted Ghostbusters to be.

The late Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman give context around getting the band together and the filmmaking process and Sigourney Weaver is personable and fascinating to hear from.

From the creation of Slimer, realising the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man attack to the hell hounds, it’s all here. Bueno even interviews the ghost librarian from the classic opening sequence!

What sets this book apart from the doc is Bueno’s in-depth, and heartfelt story where she documents the journey of the doc from the idea to its eventual release and everything in between.

You will not find a better book about Ghostbusters out there.

Cleanin’ up the Town: The Story of Ghostbusters by Claire Bueno is available now in hardback.
