Both the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises have all encompassing, exhaustative (in a good way) video retrospectives with some connective DNA.
The aforementioned DNA is Thommy Hutson, who has now returned with a comprehensive look at all 7 Child’s Play movies.
Hutson gets together the major players such as Brad Dourif, Don Mancini, Alex Vincent, Jennifer Tilly, Chris Sarandon and Tom Holland to take you through each film in episodic order.
It was also fascinating to see Catherine Hicks and her husband Kevin Yagher talk about how they met on the original film and their journeys as the films evolved and stepped away from their respective roles.
Much like the Reign of Chucky book by Dustin McNeill, no stone is left unturned and we hear the anecdotes straight from the horse’s mouth.
Find out the origins of the Chucky doll look, the casting process for the leads of all the films, with the re-casting of Alex Vincent’s Andy Barclay addressed plus the introduction of Tilly’s Tiffany doll from Bride of Chucky onwards.
The only notable omission is Child’s Play 3 director Jack Bender, plus people you wouldn’t expect to be involved such as Red Man (Seed of Chucky), Katherine Heigl, Billy Boyd or Hannah from S Club.
It’s fascinating to hear about Ronny Yu’s introduction to Chucky and how he mixed it up after the lukewarm response to the third film plus the ongoing fruitful relationship between Mancini and producer David Kirschner, who arguably, is equally as important to Chucky’s longevity.
Clocking in at just under 5 hours, this is the Chucky documentary you have been waiting for, and while it may require a couple of sittings to get through; the journey is incredibly worth it.
Doc of Chucky is now streaming on Shudder.
