Sienna’s Struggle – PTSD in Terrifier 3

The dust now settling for me, after watching the latest instalment of the Terrifier series.

As well as Art the Clown and a host full of other characters, our final girl from Terrifier 2, Lauren Lavera’s Sienna is back too.

Creator Damien Leone was faced with the challenge of where Sienna would be when Art came calling again. It would have been easy to put her in a box similar to Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie’s Halloween II or even Laurie from Halloween 2018. Leone’s interpretation is arguably, much more complex and more believable.

Even when she is putting on a brave face to her Aunt and Uncle plus their daughter Gabbie, who she becomes almost a surrogate big sister to, you can feel the cracks in her mind. While it may seem like Gabbie needs Sienna, it might be the polar opposite. Sienna is trying to re-connect with her family and take back some of what she’s lost; it’s just Art may not allow her these luxuries.

After 5 years, Sienna has sought treatment after the latest Miles County massacre but she isn’t okay. She still carries the physical and mental scars of her encounter with the sadistic clown everywhere.

She takes pills to try and forget, much the same as Nancy in Dream Warriors, but once she realises they can’t stop what’s coming she goes into battle mode.

Sienna isn’t fully sure of her part of this story, just that she may be the only one who can stop Art and Victoria.

One of the most powerful scenes of Terrifier 3 involves Sienna confronting a mouthy podcaster who wants to exploit her trauma. This is the moment when she finally lets the walls come down and you really feel what she’s been going through, and Lavera absolutely crushes it.

This scene shows how Terrifier continues to evolve as a series, as Sienna is now equally as important to the franchise as Art; they are this story’s Laurie and The Shape.

The fact that both are still breathing (of sorts) by the closing credits, hopefully premeditates a final showdown in Terrifier 4 where Sienna can rise above her oppressor and end him once and for all.

As we know though in horror, even if she wins, she will always carry the scars of her encounters with her, she just might not be afraid to show them.

Sienna may be the final girl for a whole new generation of horror to get behind.
