Tales from the Void (Grimmfest 2024) review

Ever since the cancellation of the excellent Channel Zero, genre fans have been crying out for an anthology series to sink their teeth into.

Francesco Loschiavo’s Tales from the Void may be that series.

Set to hit screens early next year, the series was previewed at this year’s Grimmfest, with three episodes from its 6-episode season airing.

Up first we have Into the Unknown, directed by genre mainstay Joe Lynch, which focuses on a mysterious black box that appears outside a block of flats. This episode brims with tension and is much more of a slowburn that fans of high-concept sci-fi will lap up.

Loschiavo directs the next episode Plasic Doll, which focuses on a daughter whose only friend is a plastic doll. ‘…Doll’ deals with the ripple of effects of child abuse and growing up in a home of addicts.

For those who didn’t quite get on board with the opener, this episode revels in its nasty streak and has a handful of surprises up its sleeve.

Rounding things off, Fixed Frequency feels like an episode aimed at the Stranger Things crowd. We follow a trio of teenage friends whose idea of a good time is hacking into local baby monitors to freak out parents across the neighbourhood; but what happens when someone answers them back?

Keeping on from the last episode, Fixed Frequency twists the boy who cried wolf motif and creates something truly dark and unnerving. This one goes places you may not expect.

Overall, we’ve seen enough from Tales from the Void to certainly pique interest ahead of its debut early next year.
