This Canadian quickie creature feature looks back to the comedy monster movies of the 1980s in its story of an escaped lab reared beast which prowls the toilet systems of an apartment complex.
Self employed plumber Don (Steven Ogg) is getting a little sick of his son’s (Daniel Doheny) germophobic behaviour, a condition which stems from Sonny’s reaction to his mother’s death; to break this cycle Don decides to induct the boy into his trade; hardly a suitable occupation for someone so averse to dirt and infection.
Don and Sonny report to the fancy Palmer Estate, where a resident has reported a blocked toilet. But things are about to get ugly; another resident, who’s been working on a secret project (Project X of course) has taken his work home with him; the resultant creature bites him and escapes into the estate’s toilet system, where it pops up to attack the residents. Don and Sonny, together with receptionist Patricia (Chelsea Clark) try and keep a lid on the mayhem while working out how to exterminate the toilet monster.
Adapted from a short film script by Brandon Cohen, at 70 minutes plus end credits this just about qualifies as a feature film. As a comedy it’s rather short on laughs, unless fart gags and laughing at old people having sex floats your boat; the main draw here is Steven Kostanski’s practical effects, which are (un)pleasantly splattery and, for the budget, plentiful. But it’s thin stuff all round, and the final shot’s suggestion of a sequel didn’t exactly excite me.
