It’s very easy when casually discussing the Giallo film, to focus solely on the big hitters such as Dario Argento and Umberto Lenzi, but there’s plenty more to this sub-genre.
Shameless Films’ latest release Who Saw Her Die? is a case and point for a forgotten Giallo that certainly deserves the special edition treatment it receives here.
Beautifully restored to 2K quality, Who Saw Her Die? is a twisty and turny feature that isn’t afraid to go dark. Lest we forget a child is kidnapped and murdered within the first five minutes!
Starring former Bond George Lazenby, we follow the journey of a father who after suffering his own tragedy (mainly through his own neglect), looks to solve the case of the mysterious black gloved and veiled killer roaming the streets of Venice.
Watching this film just made me wish more horror films were set in Venice, as there really is nowhere on else with its natural scenery. Just the way the mist rolls across the water, and its vast yet compact living areas, make it at times sprawling and others claustrophobic.
Ennio Morricone is on hand to provide numerous tracks for the soundtrack, including a haunting score when the killer is nearby, predating a slasher tropes from Halloween by six years.
Who Saw Her Die? is the best kind of Giallo, as it constantly has you guessing about the killer up until its bonkers finale, which has a rather amusing dummy utilised, to add to the unintentional humour.
Hopefully this sort of release from Shameless, will ensure that Who Saw Her Die? becomes a cult favourite for Giallo fans.
Who Saw Her Die? is now available on Blu-Ray from Shameless Films.
