Blow for fans of 90s slasher School’s Out

Outside of a rare Region 1 DVD, released by Fangoria in the 2000s, 90s German slasher School’s Out and its subsequent sequel have been hard to track down.

Director Robert Sigl had quietly been working behind the scenes to bring the lesser-seen slasher to Blu-Ray, working with an unnamed U.S Label.

Sadly those plans have now been dashed, due to a rights issue with the music used in the film.

Sigl provided the following update on his Facebook profile, saying,

“Sad news for the fans of our SCHOOL’S OUT slashers – and for us makers, the original creator Kai Meyer, and yours truly, the director, as well. For a while, it looked as if a renowned label in the U.S. was going to release the two films on Blu-ray.

Turns out that RTL has not cleared the rights of some music and songs outside of Germany. Does that mean the network has ignored this issue when selling the films back in 2000 into numerous territories including video rights to MTI Home Video in the United States…?”

Sigl said he has since been informed by the unnamed label that they won’t be able to release the films in the U.S as planned.

Is this the end for School’s Out and Schools Out 2 though? Could another label step into the void and finally give these slashers the attention they need?

Maybe another boutique label such as Arrow or Treasured Films could step in?
