Director Dutch Marich talks Horror in the High Desert 3: Firewatch

The Horror in the High Desert series has taken the horror genre by storm.

The found footage series is set for a third chapter, Firewatch, which is set to debut on streaming soon. We caught up with director Dutch Marich, to spill the blood and guts following the film’s premiere at Unnamed Film Festival.

It seems like full speed ahead for Horror in the High Desert 3, where is post-production up to?

Part 3 is complete and should drop any day now! Depending on when you publish this it may already be out.

The first two films had some of the most chilling imagery of recent years, how do you aim to up to the ante this time around?

Well first – thank you! There’s a special treat in Part 3 that I don’t think most will see coming. I’ve browsed a few Reddit threads and seen a few comments on various social media platforms where a few people have mentioned it, but other than that it’s some imagery that I have never seen used in a horror film before. At least not like this.

How has the success of the first two films affected you?

It’s been the wildest experience. I’ve been making indie films for a while and to have part 1 blow up the way it did reignited my love for filmmaking and storytelling. I feel very blessed to have found an audience. They’re amazing and they’ve changed my life.

Firewatch sounds like it will return to the narrative of the first film with Gary’s disappearance, was this always your intention?

I hate to say this but you’ll have to watch and find out for the answer, ha!

Do you aim to keep making Horror in the High Desert or are there any other horror sub-genres you want to explore?

I absolutely plan to keep the HITHD series going. But, yes, I have other projects in the works. Some really exciting stuff! I wish I could say more but there should be an announcement coming up shortly…..

Is there a plan for a release of the trilogy on physical media?

Since this is an ongoing series that doesn’t end with Part 3, we will just add each entry to the online store/physical media when they come out. Eventually, we’ll have a fun box set. They will be stocked soon on our website – and please follow our social media pages for announcements on that.

Why do you feel found footage films work so well?

There’s something about the point-of-view style of filmmaking, hearing a voice behind the camera, that forces you into the shoes of the character holding it. It’s exhilarating, easy to get lost in and very fun to play with as a filmmaker.

Horror in the High Desert 3: Firewatch is available to watch now on XX.
