The name of Luigi Bazzoni may not be as synonymous with the Giallo, as the names of Martino, Argento and Bava but he certainly has solid credentials.
The Fifth Cord and The Possessed are solid entries in his filmography, and on the lighter side of the scale, Giallo-wise we have Footprints aka Footprints on the Moon.
Given the remaster treatment from Shameless Films, Footprints is more of a mystery thriller than out-and-out Giallo. We have the whodunit, of some kind, element but gone are the erotic and violent levels usually expected in this popular sub-genre.
We follow Alice, who is having vivid dreams that she thinks are plucked from a repressed memory, as she travel to Ghana to try to unravel the mystery.
Bazzoni shoots Footprints in a dreamy haze, where you are never really sure what is reality or a dream. The locations are stunning and given the 4K treatment, the colours pop and the transfer is excellent.
We also get three different versions of the film, albeit one version just has the Italian credits whereas we have the director’s version and the U.S cut of Footprints.
Footprints will be essential for Giallo collectors but may not draw a wider circle beyond that given its rather tame horror themes.
Footprints is available now from Shameless Films.
